Coastal Miller Landscaping has been serving homeowners and businesses across Greater Victoria since 2022, and I still get the same satisfaction pulling out of a driveway knowing a yard looks better than when I arrived.
Why I Started Coastal Miller
I didn't grow up planning to run a landscaping company. But I've always been happiest outside — hiking trails around Mount Douglas Park, spending time in the yard, working with my hands. When I got into the trade, something clicked. I liked the physicality of it, the problem-solving, and the fact that you can see real results at the end of every day.
After a couple of years learning the ropes with an established crew, I knew I wanted to build something of my own — a company small enough to care about every single property but skilled enough to handle serious projects. That's what Coastal Miller is. It's not a franchise. There's no call centre. When you reach out, you're talking to me or someone on my small team who actually knows your property.
My Experience
I started working in landscaping in 2020 with a local Victoria company. That's where I learned the fundamentals — proper mowing technique, how to grade a yard so water drains where it should, which plants actually thrive in our coastal climate versus the ones that look great at the garden centre and struggle by August. I paid attention, asked questions, and put in long days.
By 2022, I felt ready to go out on my own. I registered Coastal Miller Landscaping, picked up my first clients in Saanich, and grew from there through referrals and word of mouth. I've since worked on properties from the Olympic View neighbourhood in Colwood to established lots in Gordon Head and everywhere in between. Every property has taught me something new, and I bring all of that experience to the next job.
What Makes Us Different
The owner is on the job — every time.
I say "us" because I do have a small, dedicated crew — but the difference is that I stay hands-on. I'm not managing jobs from a desk. I'm on-site, doing the work alongside my team, talking directly with clients about what they need.
That personal approach matters. When you call a larger company, you might talk to a scheduler who's never seen your yard. With us, the person planning your project is the same person executing it. That means fewer miscommunications, no surprises, and accountability you can actually count on.
I'm also honest about scope. If a project needs something outside my wheelhouse — specialized irrigation, arborist-level tree work — I'll point you to someone I trust rather than take on something I can't do well. My goal is to build a long-term relationship with clients, not squeeze every dollar out of a single visit.
What I Love About This Work
Honestly, it's the transformations. Walking onto a property where the lawn is patchy, the hedges are overgrown, and the beds are buried under old mulch — then leaving it looking completely different a few hours later. That never gets old.
I also love that no two properties are the same. A front and backyard renovation in Broadmead requires a completely different approach than maintaining a compact downtown lot in James Bay. Victoria's neighbourhoods each have their own character — different soil conditions, different sun exposure, different trees and shrubs — and I enjoy adapting to all of it.
There's something grounding about this work. You're outside in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, making people's homes and businesses look their best. I take a lot of pride in that.
